Key Control

There are several manufacturers that offer high security keying systems which are designed to reduce, and in some cases, eliminated unauthorized key duplication. These systems will allow property owners to insure themselves that unauthorized keys are not being made or distributed.

Without key control, your security hardware investment is wasted

You can invest thousands of dollars in security hardware, but if you don't control the keys that have been issued to authorized keyholders, you could loose all of the security that you have worked so hard to establish. Key control involves two main areas, key duplication control and keying system information management. In order to safeguard your security investment you need to protect your facility with both of these prudent key control measures.

Patented key duplication control

Unauthorized key duplication remains as the single most violated security policy in today's business. In fact nearly all keys can and will be duplicated with no questions asked. The stamping of "do not duplicate" presents a challenge to most key cutters instead of a threat. It has been estimated that unauthorized key duplication accounts for as much as 40% of unexplained illegal entries resulting in billions of dollars in losses annually. Here are two common misconceptions about "Restricted Keys":

  • FICTION: Keys stamped "Do not Duplicate" are protected by law.
  • FACT: Most keys are stamped "Do Not Duplicate" just as a service to their owners, there is no legal connotation.
  • FICTION: Keys for all high security locks are protected from unauthorized copies.
  • FACT: Only the key blank can be protected from unauthorized manufacturing and then only if the key blank itself is patented. Purchasers of "high security" keys and cylinders should ask to see proof of patent on the key blank and not just the lock.

Information management makes it easy to track your keys

A well designed security system involves more than locking hardware and restricted keyways. A good security plan also includes an organized recording and filing plan which makes complete information available on all locks, lock locations, keys and personnel concerned.
